Air Filters

Posted by audiphilately on April 12, 2011 at 12:35 PM

I think that sometimes automotive engineers are only worried about assembling cars, not about what it takes to maintain them later...

Case in point:  replacing the air filter should be a simple task, right?  But noooooh, in my Audi A6, it took me at least 10 minutes to try and get the air filter out, not to mention putting it back in...   There are 4 clips that hold the air cleaner cover in place, and one of them is only about 1 cm from the wheel well, so unless you have miniature fingers, it is virtually impossible to get it snapped back on (which takes considerable force to begin with).  In addition to the 4 clips, I also had to remove or set aside a variety of hoses & cables.

Now, I had to do the same task on my Volvo S80; and I had the air cleaner element removed in something like 30 seconds... Hmmm....

Oh, and I do firmly believe in using K&N Filters!  Although one should take them out and clean them periodically (something which I managed to forget for about 2 years, but after cleaning and re-oiling them, they're as good as new and the cars' engine can now breathe easier again!).
